McCall 6282

I love this dress.

I bought this very cool knit slinky a few years back at my most favorite fabric store that is closing at the end of the month…can we have a moment of silence please?  I am still in denial that Caledonia’s is closing.  What am I going to do? Not like I could have found this fabulous fabric at JoAnn’s.  Anyway, I digress.  I picked up this pattern at last week’s McCall’s pattern sale.  The cowl neck and gathers at the waist caught my eye.

I started this on last Friday, hoping to wear it to a wedding on Saturday night…I didn’t make it.  I think it took me longer to cut it out than sew it.  I fretted and worried about how to best use the border.  This was my first time to sew with a border print.  So my brain had to do mental gymnastics to make sure the side seams and back seam matched up, and I got 2 out of 3 right.  The left side matches up, but I sacrificed the right side seam for the back seam (note to self, must run more and start doing crunches).

This is a Palmer/Pletsch pattern and it is full of fitting help and sewing tips.  I mainly sewed it up per the pattern sheets. I cut out a size 14 and I made the side seam allowances 1″ wide to give me a little wiggle room.

Here is the back.  I like how the gathers camouflage my extra padding at my waist, oh, and I got 4 inches cut off my hair and I like that too.

Here are a few more pictures.  I think I will wear this a lot and it joins the other winter dresses in my closet.  All two of them.

The color of the dress is what I would call a Merlot, but in other light it is brown.  I think I need some brown dress boots.

Did I mention that the dress is lined?  I used a knit mesh.

Here is how the cowl is finished on the inside.

Here is Kate and me.

And here is me, when Kate ran through the legs of my tripod….

She didn’t knock it over…thankfully.

  1. I love your dress, Teri. It’s very flattering on you and I can see why you’ll be wearing it heaps. I’m still trying to find out what this “slinky” fabric is coz i sounds amazing!

    1. Jill I have a Dritz dress form. It is okay, but I think I need to cover it so I can pin to it. Still, it really helped in making this dress, with the lining and the waist gathers, I felt like I was wrestling with an octopus at times:)

  2. I found your blog through the Goodbye Valentino blog. I work full time and have two smallish kids so my time is very limited, but you guys really make me want to go on the year long RTW fast also. Hmm, maybe if I could finally master pants I could make a go of it. Thanks for showing us a snapshot of your life!

  3. Wow, marvelous weblog layout! How lengthy have you been running a blog for?
you make running a blog look easy. The entire glance of your site is excellent, as well
